Local Government and
Reconciliation
Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (CAR)
Before European settlement, indigenous peoples had a very localised system of
government. And today local government - as the level of government closest to
the people - must commit itself to serving and involving Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander communities.
This resource outlines ways in which local governments and communities can help
work towards reconciliation in Australia. Suggested activities include flying
the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander flag above council buildings or
inviting local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups to be involve in
council celebrations.
