Free Film Screening at Burwood: Liyarn Ngarn

ANTaR Inner West invites you, your family and friends to a special screening of the film Liyarn Ngarn. LIYARN NGARN means: 'coming together of the spirit or inner guide' and 'a place where fresh and salt water meet' in the Yawuru language of Australia's north-west Kimberley region around Broome. The film tells of Yawuru man, Patrick Dodson's 30 year mission to bring about a true and lasting reconciliation between Australia's original owners and all immigrants. It is also the story of Louis St John - an Aboriginal youth adopted by Bill Johnson in Perth and brutally murdered by two white youths on his 19th birthday - and of the young poet, Robbie Walker who died in Fremantle Jail. Archie Roach shares his experience of being stolen from his parents aged just three. Archie's hauntingly beautiful music pervades the film. Inspired by Bill Johnson's story of his adopted son and made with English actor Pete Postlethwaite, LIYARN NGARN illustrates our need as Australians to come together to overcome the appalling treatment of our Indigenous peoples. The message is not of revenge but a deep call for understanding and engagement with each other. Admission is free but numbers are limited.
